Foods That Are Toxic to Cats (Memorize This List)

Your kitchen holds several things that can kill your cat

Cats are curious eaters — and several common household foods can cause liver failure, kidney failure, or death.

Key Facts:

  • Onions and garlic (all forms: raw, cooked, powdered): destroy red blood cells (Heinz body anemia)
  • Grapes and raisins: linked to kidney failure in cats (the toxic compound is still unknown)
  • Xylitol (artificial sweetener): causes liver failure and blood sugar crash
  • Chocolate: contains theobromine — less dangerous than for dogs, but still toxic
  • Raw dough with yeast: expands in the stomach and produces alcohol during fermentation
  • Alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, raw eggs (salmonella risk), and cooked bones also dangerous

The trickiest ones are the "healthy" human foods — onions in sauces, garlic in broths, grapes as casual snacks. Cats are more sneaky eaters than dogs and may ingest small amounts repeatedly before symptoms appear.

If your cat has ingested any of these: ASPCA Animal Poison Control: 888-426-4435. Describe what was eaten and the estimated amount. Don't wait for symptoms.

💡 Did You Know? Lilies (Easter lily, Tiger lily, Daylilies) are among the most deadly plants for cats — even ingesting pollen from a lily can cause acute kidney failure. All true lilies should be banned from homes with cats.
