Is Your Dog Overweight? The Rib Test Reveals the Truth

56% of US dogs are overweight — and most owners don't know it

Over half of all dogs in the United States are overweight or obese — and excess weight is the #1 preventable health problem in dogs.

Key Facts:

  • 56% of US dogs classified as overweight or obese (APOP 2022 survey)
  • Overweight dogs live 1.8 years less on average than healthy-weight dogs
  • Excess weight increases risk of diabetes, joint disease, cancer, and heart disease
  • The Rib Test: you should feel ribs easily but not see them — if you can't feel them, your dog is overweight

The rib test is done by placing both hands on your dog's ribcage and pressing gently. You should feel each rib distinctly with light pressure, like feeling the back of your knuckles. If you have to press hard to feel ribs, your dog needs fewer calories. If ribs are visible, they need more.

Overfeeding is the main cause — including treats, table scraps, and calorie-dense dental chews. Cut calories by 10–15%, increase exercise, and recheck in 4 weeks. Slow, steady weight loss (1–2% body weight per week) is healthiest.

💡 Did You Know? A dog who is 2 pounds overweight is the equivalent of an average woman carrying 25 extra pounds. It doesn't sound like much — but to their joints and organs, it's significant.
