Kidney Disease in Cats: Prevention and Early Detection
The #1 non-accident killer of cats — and entirely manageable if caught early
Chronic kidney disease affects 1 in 3 senior cats — but caught early, many cats live comfortably for years after diagnosis.
Key Facts:
- CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) affects 30–40% of cats over 10 and is the leading cause of death in senior cats
- Kidneys lose function silently — 75% of function can be lost before blood values change
- Early symptoms: increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting
- The SDMA biomarker can detect kidney disease 17+ months earlier than the traditional creatinine test
Early diagnosis is everything. A cat in IRIS Stage 1–2 CKD can live 5+ years with proper management (diet, hydration, phosphorus restriction). A cat diagnosed in Stage 3–4 has months, not years. The difference is catching it with proactive bloodwork.
Diet makes a significant difference: low-phosphorus, high-moisture food slows disease progression. Hydration (wet food, fountain) is protective. Some cats need subcutaneous fluids at home — a simple skill that owners learn from their vet.
💡 Did You Know? Cats with CKD eating a prescription kidney diet live 2–3 times longer than those eating standard commercial food, according to multiple studies. Nutrition is one of the most powerful interventions in kidney disease.
